Project Statement:
Since the birth of the camera, people have been constantly recording life. Cameras were invented to record. What are people using cameras to record in movies, why do cameras exist, and what is worth recording. This project will explore the questions above. Inspired by Christian Marclay’s work The Clock, The Camera is a video created by Kexin Chen. This 3-minute short film is about the presence of cameras in recent movies. The project is a montage of several films that contain cameras, edited together so they show the scene with the presence of cameras. It is a thrilling journey through cinematic history as well as camera history. When watching The Camera, the audience will be experiencing a vast range of narratives, settings, and moods within the space of a few minutes.

Artist Statement:
Kexin Chen was born and raised in Beijing, China and lives in New York City. Kexin is a new media artist who works with photography, film and mixed media. Through the exploration of photography, she absorbs landscapes and people from everyday life into her work. She explores and shows the similarities and differences between New York and Beijing through her photography. By referencing romanticism and symbolism, Kexin seduces the viewer into a world of ongoing equilibrium and the interval that articulates the stream of daily events. Moments are depicted that only exist to punctuate the human drama in order to clarify our existence and to find poetic meaning in everyday life. Her works directly respond to the surrounding environment and use everyday experiences from the artist as a starting point, often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. In addition, her photography work presents an understanding and memory of the world through her interactive experiences and websites, which facilitate public engagement.
