Redefining what it means to simply apply makeup, Ashley Gilbert's Changing Face combines rich imagery and spoken word poetry to depict the process of a makeup artist. Drawing inspiration from the post feminist movement, Gilbert's daily ritual of transforming her face into a work of art becomes a message to uplift other women. Gilbert states that she has seen firsthand the way in which women are belittled for wearing makeup and how makeup is seen as a blanket behind which people hide. As a makeup artist, she wants viewers to understand that her artistry is a tool that could be used to empower people, display individualism, and allow people to exude confidence. For Gilbert, makeup says more about who she is than what others think about her.
