The Journey Of An Apple

Wei Yang’s work, The Journey of an Apple, is a video project exploring the use of chemical pesticides in agriculture and questioning the effects of such on our bodily health. Seen from the inner perspective of an apple, the viewer is taken on a journey from harvest, preparation, and consumption. Yang questions the adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” by contrasting the commonly accepted health benefits of fruit with the potential addition to our body burden. The washing of fruit, Yang contends, may prove an inadequate defense to the negative impact of chemicals and pesticides. The Journey of an Apple serves as a parable for the dangers of not only the direct consumption of these chemicals, but more broadly of the reality of the ingestion of these chemicals as they make their way through the food chain as sustenance for our livestock and fish. Modern regulation minimizing the use of chemicals and pesticides in our food supply, the artist portends, are woefully inadequate and invite higher levels of awareness and scrutiny from the average person.
