Yuna Chong

Unforeseen End

We dream and work our entire lives toward goals we have set, only to be disappointed by the unexpected turns our lives take. Sometimes these disappointments are abrupt, sometimes they are gradual, and sometimes they take us by complete surprise. Life’s road is undetermined, the future uncertain. These themes are explored in Yuna Chong’s Unforeseen End. Utilizing a clean, minimalist style coupled with symbolic imagery, Chong evokes the fragile and delicate nature of life’s dreams. In a series of videos and related photographs, Chong shows candy being dropped into a bottle that slowly fills until a sudden change disrupts and ultimately ruins the process. The artist utilizes a variety of alternate endings to represent the myriad potential ways our dreams can be obliterated. The white background and candy evoke ideals of childhood purity and innocence, which exist in tension with the unpredictability of life.
