Erica Ly’s hybrid video animation work, Normality, features tablet-drawn doodles of magical beings moving through their seemingly ordinary lives against the backdrop of New York City. Extracted from their ethereal worlds, Ly utilizes the medium of animation to normalize these fantastical creatures into the ordinary and mundane. Normality explores antithetical realities, reverting mythical creatures into a humdrum world. By minimizing their supernatural qualities and abilities, Ly invites the viewer to see the extraordinary as ordinary. Prolonged exposure to the enchanted has the effect of extracting magic from the magical.
