Read about the project

New York City, one of the largest cities in the world, is constantly changing. Every day older buildings are being replaced by newer skyscrapers, or are being renovated to match with modern times. Changes by Jieying Chen is a series of photographs that portrays the traditionally old and the lavishly new in New York City. The series explores contrast between architectural structures in New York City, showing how buildings from different eras merge together. The artist drew inspiration for this piece when she began to take notice of the changes being made to her surrounding environment in New York City, which she has known almost all her life. She noticed how New York’s architectural cycles overlap rather than replacing one another. Her photographs display old buildings and new buildings side by side in one frame. In Chen’s photographs New York City won’t let the old go away. Rather, new buildings merge well with old ones, showing generations coming together.
