Read about the project

Nostalgia, a video by Glenda Solis, evokes nostalgia through old commercials and television scenes. Nostalgia takes viewers on a “road trip,” as if the audience is seated in a car, with compiled footage set in the center on a background of a road. Retro footage captures the essence of the past, while the “road trip” experience implies a sense of direction, progression, and ultimately, the future. The featured video clips are popular and easily recognizable, taking the viewer back in time while also conceptually moving forward. The audio furthers the experience as it also holds nostalgic value. Nostalgia carries an element of simplicity, which also captures the light-hearted nature of childhood. Regardless of one’s age, Nostalgia evokes positive feelings of the past and makes us reminisce about what used to be. As one journeys through childhood nostalgia, the notion of growth is highlighted. Returning to the past while presently driving a car moving towards the future is a paradox that urges the audience to reflect on their perception of time and progression. Nostalgia can be interpreted and appreciated through these various lenses.
