Read about the project

Overripe is a split-screen time-lapse video of an avocado rotting and being reversed which symbolizes degeneration and generation. Avocados were first discovered in 500 BC by the Aztecs who named them āhuacatl, which translates to testicles. The name āhuacatl was chosen because of the avocado’s shape and the way they hang from the trees in pairs. Playing with the pair concept and intertwining it with a time-lapse effect, Overripe visualizes how, as time goes on, one generation becomes old while a new one emerges, becoming a cycle. However, Overripe shows this cycle becoming linear. Overripe strives to capture people’s attention to educate and inform the viewers that the world is like the avocado. The impact we have on Earth is much more damaging than we think it is.
