Entrapment, by Ren Li, is a video representation of a person's loss of consciousness when they are planted into society's cycle of work. It brings the consequences of this exploitative capitalist system into the light. Through dreary yet confined scenes, Li allows us to feel the same restricting pressure the main character feels to succeed. The never-ending cycle of work robs a person of their individualism, as well as the ownership of their own lives. Every day is lived in repetition. Some may call it stability. Unaware of being trapped within this cycle, we, like the main character, are in a constant standstill.
It is a thinly veiled vicious cycle, starting with the materialistic path that is forced onto individuals even before birth. The video performance reinforces the feeling of living up to someone else's expectations, forever reaching towards materialized living standards that society deems as successful. The only rewards that the individuals gain from this pernicious cycle is the eventual mechanized capsule version of their own bodies.
