Joyce Huang

plattr by Joyce Huang is an interactive series of stylized photographs of desserts. The artist coded a website that appropriates the design of popular dating apps such as Tinder and applies that aesthetic to pastries. This multi-modal project showcases the process of desserts’ being created from scratch, baked, and finally curated into appetizing images. Huang forces viewers to click on either a heart symbol or an “x” to progress through the image gallery and view the before and after images in each dessert. plattr aims to educate users about the involved process of creating food compared to the shallow UIs used by dating apps. Applications and social media highlight the final, stylized product for quick consumption rather than showing the slow process of actually making the product.

plattr is Huang's way of emphasizing the meaning of food and baking in her life. With this work, she hopes to bring awareness of the creative process to her audience, as the culinary arts themselves are a whole field within art. Huang is passionate about food and she believes her work brings joy to people. The plates are her canvas, and her desserts are her art.
