Queer of Hearts

Kevin Valdez

Queer of Hearts is a wearable dress sculpture constructed by Kevin Valdez. The unique form of this dress presents the necessary convergence of work and art. Constructed solely out of playing cards, an unconventional material for a dress, this wearable sculpture combines the required mental labor behind conceptualization and the physical labor of construction. Valdez incorporates drag into this piece as it serves as a form of work as well as art. While the action of doing drag is work, it also is a performative art form that provides satisfaction to the artist/worker.

Valdez encourages the public to participate in this project by wearing the piece and sharing it with others through social media to share this satisfaction of work and art. This piece is an intersection of art and work that allows the viewer to focus on the process as well as the accomplishment of conceptual design by embracing the labor and performance that comes with it.
